Mice and flossis

A colour collage based on these colours:

Looking through my files I found photos of the “Flossis” – an art installation on the banks of the river Rhine at the “Medienhafen” in Düsseldorf, where a remarkable collection of architectural showcases are assembled. Unfortunately, these climbing sculptures (24 of them, their popular name derives from the German word for fins or colloquially large hands) were never meant for outdoor life and after 30 years they had to be dismantled in 2018 for safety reasons. But I took a few pictures of them (literally while running past) and their colours are so suitable for this weeks Värikollaasit scheme that I had to add a second collage:

Compliments

It wouldn’t be Germany, if you didn’t have a “Verein” (club) for fishing.

And there it is: the cliché of the woman waiting for the mighty man to catch the food.
It looks like the swan is not amused.

Fading light

A couple of days ago, I went for a walk late in the day. I took my camera but more out of habit and the photos I took were mere snaps.

I passed this lamp and just when I took a rather fuzzy picture of it, it was switched on.

The spire of the village church with the mountain range of Rhineland Palatium in the distance.
The tv tower is about 20 km , the mountain behind it double the airline-distance.
The view over the Rhine plain – not managing a proper sundown.

Fairies on the ferries

Sometime during summer our running group does a ferry run. It’s a different location each year, we find a ferry, and we plan a run which involves crossing a waterway.

It’s a lot of fun.

The way back may be another ferry ride or crossing a bridge. Most of us dress up as fairies (because it is fun). We’ve had runs which involved skinny dipping.

And it always ends in more fun.

Sadly – you might have guessed it – this year’s fairy / ferry run has been cancelled.

Street advertising

Let’s get the bad ones out of the way first.

There is no denying that both signs are racist.  In fact the tobacco shop’s sign is so breathtakingly offensive that I am amazed that it is still openly displayed.  The “Big Mama” sign however, is a bit tricky since it is a shop run by Africans, selling African products to Africans (particularly food and beauty care).  Is it less racist because it is a name and picture chosen by a member of the racially depicted group?

Quickly add an example which is lot more politically correct but more importantly morally correct:

Eine-Welt-Laden

A sign for a fair trade shop.  They used to be called “Third World Shops” (Dritte-Welt-Läden).

And now for something completely different: animals on shop signs for a café and a dog grooming salon:

I also like this sign on a (cheap) hotel:

But there should always be this:

let there be crumbs
