I was treated to an impromptu fireworks display yesterday. While I was clearing up the classroom where I sub at the moment I saw rockets going in the sky. The staff of the electric company next door was out in their yard, in the dark and in the cold, barbequeing and drinking and shooting rockets. I can only guess it was a company Christmas party. They knew that what they were doing was illegal (there are strict regulations about shooting fireworks, limited to New Year’s Eve, even selling them early is forbidden) because I heard: “If the police shows up …” followed by toasts. Since they didn’t invite me to join them I left before I could see whether the police did indeed show up to disturb the festivities (or possibly join in).
