Come on, Baby, light that Fire!

This photo was taken at the signal fire event in Hilsenhain im Odenwald. The children of the village set the huge pile of wood alight.

I would like to continue a discussion about the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), the European law that came into existence in 2016. Are we allowed to take a photo of this? Obviously, this is a European Union discussion because it is really about the law. But if you have an input with a general point of view, please feel free to voice your opinion. I know that in the US it is usually said that there can be no expectation of privacy in public places (although this is not as clear-cut as one is often led to believe).

I am today more wary to take pictures of strangers, particularly children. The regulations make little distinction between taking the picture and publishing it. But in this case I think it is allowed as it was a public event, a performance if you will. However, I did single out this particular boy in this shot. I picked the shot where his face was least visible though, because I’m not completely sure about the actual law.

Any thoughts?

The Ferry Across the Neckar

has raised its prices. It used to be 70 cents per adult (with or without a bicycle), now it’s a full Euro. And for a car it’s 2 Euros now. You can reach Neckarhausen from Ladenburg via the bridge but it will add one-and-a-half kilometre to your journey. And it will take away about 10km of fun.

Whose Festival Is It?

At the outset of our annual town festival the mayor and other dignitaries as well as the wine princesses of the region gather on the balcony of the old town hall. The mayor gives a speech and everybody waits for the cannon to fire from the nearby castle. Once the shot is heard the mayor asks the crowd below: “Wem is die Kerwe?” and the crowd bellows: “Unser!!!” – and four days of revelling can commence.

It’s not Five Minutes to Midnight yet

Nor quite seven either. But it’s almost seven.

I suppose I could have gone out and caught a clock at exactly 7 o’clock but it was much more fun to look at all the clocks in my archive. The closest I came to 7 o’clock was half past six (or “half seven”) on the face of the Uhrtürmlein in Frankfurt

and three minutes to seven in Bourg-en-Bresse at the con-cathedral Notre Dame.

Seven for September #29
