There are a number of reasons why nostalgia combines with snow in my mind. It always looks so clean and pristine when it is first fallen and gives even old buildings a new and shiny coat.
I always want to capture it very quickly because it lasts so seldom in our area. I often think if I don’t take a picture of it today it will be gone tomorrow.

Once upon a time there was a small river running through a part of my hometown.

My sisters still remember playing on the railing and in the water. I am a few years younger and by my time the Grundelbach was already covered and ran for about 1 km beneath the road.

The town’s hospital was built over it and

the fire station next to it.

But even that is history now. There is a new regional hospital and a modern fire station away from the hills which hampered expansion. On the site is now a supermarket, a car park, and the traffic is led through a tunnel. On top of all that a large development with flats for the elderly and doctor’s offices has been established

Historic photographs are mounted on the walls.

At present, there is a building site for residential houses opposite which makes a panorama shot of the photographic mural difficult. But I might revisit the photos in a year’s time when the pedestrian area is free again.

Some 50+ years ago this was often what we ate on a Saturday: potato soup and yeast dumplings or sometimes yeast dumplings and wine sauce. It was either and not all together as it is offered here on the window of this pastry shop in Ladenburg, near Mannheim. I had never seen this combination – Dampfnudel und Kartoffelsuppe – in a restaurant before. It was a real blast from the past, evocative of Saturday mornings which were spent in school, coming home to mum’s home cooking. A time when Saturday afternoons were meant for working in the house and the garden, shops closed at 1 or 2pm, and the busy day slowly eased into the weekend. Food on Saturdays was simple and traditional, usually eaten in the kitchen, unlike more formal Sunday fare.

(* explanation: this is a well known joke in German, a literal translation of a saying into English which in English of course, doesn’t make sense and is only funny for Germans – however, non-German speakers can take it literally: As I was walking in the woods …)
