A German Corner

The Deutsches Eck (“German Corner”) is the place where the Moselle river flows into the Rhine. In the photo on the bottom is the water of the Rhine, above it the water from the Moselle. The different colours (due to different sediments, different weather, etc.) show that it takes a while for the two rivers to coalesce.

And now lets mix Rhine wine and wine from the Moselle and see what happens…

Now You Hear It, Now You Don’t

The word squirrel is said to be notoriously difficult to pronounce in English – at least for non-native speakers. For many Germans it’s a dead give-away (BTW: I can pronounce squirrel and have never understood the difficulties others have with the word). There is a word in the German language that does exactly the same: it outs people as non-natives even if their spoken German is otherwise flawless: Eichhörnchen. Now guess what it means.

Above you see a squirrel doing a disappearing act. I could also say: Oben sehen Sie ein Eichhörnchen, wie es verschwindet.

Circle Up!

The words “in the circle” has a special meaning to anyone who has ever hashed (for more information check out Hash House Harriers on the net). After a run hashers congregate in a circle (or a more or less circle shaped form) and have fun, rehashing (sic!) what happened while out in the wilds. Lots of singing and drinking (a beverage of your choice which is often but not necessarily beer) and frivolity is involved.

Freedom IS across a county line if you are not in Munich because there is the Münchner Freiheit (Munich’s Freedom, a square in the borrow of Schwabing).

And in Brandenburg it IS a place you float to find – just follow the Havel river. (Ironic that there is no stopping once you reach Freedom Close).
