Castle Wildenstein is a spur castle, i.e. a castle built on a mountain peak as a fortification. It was built in the 13th century in the Swabian Alb, above the young Danube. Access is through a high wooden bridge on some spindly looking pillars.

This fortitude against capture would also be a weakness if the (small) army besieging the castle had enough time on its hand (and no one would come to the aide of the beleaguered castle inhabitants).

It is. And the best thing: it’s now a youth hostel. When we stayed there this summer with a group of people, our oldest member remembered having stayed there 75 years ago, when he was 14!!
