The Jewel on the Neckar

When the French laid waste the castle in Heidelberg one final time in 1693 they wanted to destroy the castle and the town. Their spoils would have been the Kurpfalz, the Electorate of the Palatinate, the state consisting of many smallish areas in the Upper Rhine Valley between Moselle and Kraichgau.

They blew up the towers and walls, they made the buildings uninhabitable, for all intents and purposes they spoilt the castle. Yet, 100 years later and ever since the castle ruin has become the centre of German romantics. So, did the soldiers really spoil it?
