Happy Birthday, Dear Henry

It’s Henry’s birthday today. He is not great with cat toys and other items designed for cats. The only toy he is really interested in is a dangler toy with a human attached. Anything else, like a fish moving when touched, laser pointers, intelligent feeders with balls and holes etc. go unnoticed after an initial sniff. I’m not decided whether he is too dumb to understand how they work or too intelligent to be bothered with this stuff. The same goes for cat sleeping places: he ignores everything prepared for him, choosing to nap on the foot end of our bed in winter, the ironing board in the living room and various cardboard boxes. The only thing that he really uses besides his feeding bowls is the small scratching post. So much so that it is in tatters and we thought to get him a new one for his birthday. We had a large scratching post with various levels to lie on and Henry ignored it. I always thought this was because he is an indoor/outdoor cat and outside is much more suited to his interests.

However, we bought Tsepo.Tsepo looks like a zebra but is really a quagga, we decided. We put it in the living room with some trepidation and … (drumroll) ,,, Henry likes it. He plays with the ball attached to the tail, scratches the legs and even occasionally lies in it. Yeah!

Happy sixth birthday, Henry!
