Once a month at 12 noon you can hear sirenes over German towns and cities. It’s the alarm which tests that the sirenes are functional. There is the actual alarm and the all clear.
Originally, they were introduced during war time (ww II) but they might be used for natural catastrophes and chemical / industrial catastrophes, including from nuclear facilities. I believe they were used fairly successfully in 2021 when there was a catastrophic flood in a part of the Palatinate. I cannot remember hearing them ever in earnest.
