Rosie’s Scandal

“Skandaaaaaaaal!” is immediatly in my head when I hear the word “scandal”. It’s from a song by the Spider Murphy Gang, a German music band from the 70’s. Their song “Skandal im Sperrbezirk” (scandal in the off-limits area) tells the story of Rosie, a prostitute who competes with the regular working women who stay outside the off-limits area in the centre of Munich. Every German in the correct age range knows Rosie’s phone number (Munich 32-16-8) by heart as the song is a perennial party favourite.

The beautifully painted door is from Mannheim’s Jungbusch quarter, decidedly NOT an off-limits area. Its heydays are over though, and nowadays there are lots of low-income families living in the area (hence, I baulk at calling the change gentrification – although I’m sure that’s what will happen down the line).
