In 1960 Ted Herold, a German, at the time fairly well-known singer, aka Harald Walter Bernhard Schubring, had a no. 1 hit with the title “Moonlight”. I always assumed that it was a cover version of an English song but not so. It’s a German original, the only English word in the song is “moonlight”.
It’s not a bad song and it became the greatest hit of “the German Elvis”. If you want to check it out, here you go.

The song is a real period piece, isn’t it?

It’s sounds like Elvis performing on Hogan’s Heros! hehehehe

I think it was rather his looks that he got that moniker.

I believe you. It’s not a series I’ve ever watched. The song was produced in the time that Elvis was stationed in Germany with the army, so his looks and I guess also his songs were very present at the time.

Lovely moonlight and water photo Elke. The song was a bit not for me

It’s nostalgia pure for me. Because we had the lp of the no. 1 hits in Germany in 1960. I don’t know how often I’ve played that record, that’s a year after I was born. I’m sure my teenage sisters played this record again and again while little me absorbed. I still know all of them, and believe me, some where rather awful (a better one that year was Conny Francis singing the German version of “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool”).

I like The Beatles singing their early hits in German

It was kind of cute but on pure German pronunciation Conny Francis was much better. And they all were better than a number of German singers of the time who thought they had to sing in English.
