Roach

Well, 5 (letters) out of 8 is not bad.

Children’s Easter chocolate in Germany, it’s actually a May beetle or chafer. But since an American friend screeched “Cockroach, it’s a chocoolate cockroach!” we call it that, too. And it was my first thought when I saw the prompt. And sometimes, the first thought is not the worst.

  1. My first encounter with these less-than-delightful bugs was at university, where my (modern, purpose built) hall of residence housed resident populations in the bathrooms, sneaking out ahead of you as you emerged from a bath.

    1. Oh, but these chocolate ones are not roaches at all. They are admittedly huge beetles, between 2 and 3 centimeters. Every seven years (that’s how long their cocoons or whatever it is called with beetles take to mature, so they come in waves) there are lots of them. It used to be that children were paid to collect them ánd then in the 1970s there were very few about and then a famous German singer-songwriter, called Reinhard Mey, wrote the early eco-anthem: There are no more May chafer beetles. They have since come back but not as many as there used to be.
