A German wedding tradition: the couple gets some mock work to do (with a few handicaps thrown in, like the bound up hands, and possibly a blindfold, too) and they have to hit the nails on the head. The effort is real enough – will it foretell how well they will work together in their joint future?

What a great tradition!

The better known tradition with the same purpose is “Polterabend”. Traditionally that was a party for friends the night before the actual wedding (the wedding feast being mainly for the family) and it’s a rustic party, often a barbeque and sausages are involved. Guests bring some old crockery which is smashed in the driveway or somewhere similar and the clearing of the shards is the first task that the couple has to do together.

Oh I only knew of “breaking the china” tradition! Having to clean up the mess together can be a real predictor of the success of the marriage 😂.

My personal theory is that every marriage has a foretold finite amount of broken china. And what is smashed at the Polterabend is deducted from this amount, i.e. the more china is broken on that evening, the less will be during the marriage.
