Distance is relative

That’s our hometown, as seen from a relatively short distance, about 12 km to the north. We live not even 3km to the south church spire on the left but it is for the moment too far for us as a couple. Our car broke down on Saturday night and has been standing in front of a garage ever since. My sister collected us and brought us home. Where we are. I could go out on my bike (and I did go to the bakery which is open even though it is a public holiday) but my husband with his dud knee is homebound. He can manage a couple of kilometres probably more if he really needed to but would have to pay with pain in the days after. So he won’t. The centre of town is too distant for him without a vehicle.

  1. This is such a weird coincidence, Elke. I had to have my car towed to the dealership on Friday. Luckily it coasted to a halt just three houses down the street, but still…I just had it in the shop two weeks ago for a top-to-tail checkup. I am so ticked off…!!

    1. Oh no! Our car was due for a check-up this coming week (see my answer to Sue about that). We were lucky in a way, I guess. It happened on the highway but it happened exactly at the exit of our town, coming from 100km away. If it had stopped that far away it would have been more complicated to get home, more expensive as well. – And on our way ealier as well as coming back we remarked on the fact that there were many cars broken down on the side of the road. Luckily we didn’t impede traffic but there were jams associated with many of them. Maybe the cars didn’t like the sudden upsurge of heat either.

  2. Maybe your gimpy husband should consider getting a mobility scooter. I have a bum hip and had back surgery and my walking even relatively short distances is over. But our dog needs walking and my wife doesn’t want to walk her alone, especially at night. So I bought a “senior mobility scooter” and I can go on walks with her and the dog while sitting and riding beside them in the comfort of my scooter. I can even ride it to grocery store, drug store, and other shops, which are less than a mile away from our home.

Something he might wish to consider.
