I think in the UK, chips are known as crisps and French fries are known as chips (as in “fish and chips”).

Chips here as well. Our hot chips are chips too. French fries are a waste of effort.

In South Africa we distinguish between chips (the crisp ones) and “slap chips” when speaking about the cooked small rods. “Slap” is not English here but Afrikaans, meaning limp.
