Monochrome Madness is hosted by Brian from Bushboy’s blog this week. He suggested we show you some jugs. You can link to Brian’s site or to Leanne’s Monochrome Madness site.
Beer gardens are the standard but around Frankfurt there are garden pubs that serve no beer at all but only the local version of cider. This Äbbelwoi is traditionally served in 1, 2 or 5 litre jugs (with glasses for sharing) made of stoneware. They are called Bembel. They have a salt based lacquer which makes them grey with greyish-blue decorations. The traditional decorations is a distinctive look that’s easily recognised.

These are the special bembel made for the Frankfurt Hash House Harriers as farewell gifts to Hashers who move away.

Although technically not jugs these pots are made in the same style. They used to be kitchen items but these days are mostly seen as flower pots.

The decorations are easily recognised and nowadays also used on caps and shirts, worn by tourists and local patriots.
But real afficionados keep their bembel close to their heart.

Something is going on with WP and I cannot pull up Brian’s post. I click on it and get a notice from WP about ” a Glitch has occurred.” Hopefully, they fix it quickly.

I haven’t tried yet. I fell asleep in the middle of the afternoon today (after a bad night and a morning of teaching). I’ll try now.

I just tried now, too, and it worked. Must have been a short outage on WP’s part. The link didn’t work before but now it does. Maybe WP needed a nap, too. Thanks for trying, Elke!

I tried now, but it’s later now, and it worked. I now linked it on my post so if you still have problems you can try via my ping back.

Well, I take it back. I can get to Brian’s site from your pingback, but cannot get to it from the email, which is how I read blogs. I get a notification that there is a CLI Glitch. Whatever that is….

Äppler / Ebbelwoi – whatever you want to call it, is not for everyone. But if you are so inclined, let’s raise our glasses!

The jugs have a different meaning and use. I do like cider as well. A great gift and they look great.
Thanks for joining in MM#62 Elke 😀

My pleasure entirely, Brian.

My pleasure. On a side note: English (or English-conditioned) people who expect cider are in for a shock when they have an Äppler for the first time. The only thing those beverages have in common is that they are made of apples.

There was a lace in Sydney where we used to buy a cider called Scrumpy that was very different to the gentile ciders of the English.

We could compare. — I’m a bit worried though because — Pratchett (of course). In the Ramtops, the mountainous area of the discworld, they have scrumble: Scumble is made from apples. Well, mainly apples, which in no way guarantees a low alcohol content. Scumble is drunk in thimblefuls, is strong enough to be used for cleaning spoons, and should not be put in a metal container or allowed to come into contact with water.

The alcoholic content in Scrumpy was never measured but a few glasses ensured you had the wobbly boots on 😂

I really like your approach to the Elke, it is not something I would ever have thought of. Great post.
