Germany’s largest city

I’ve been told that foreigners when they first come to Germany and drive on the autobahn believe Ausfahrt is a very big city since there are so many exits pointing towards it.

Ausfahrt of course, is “exit”. Notwithstanding, especially USAmericans think it very funny to omit the h and snigger about the directional aus (aka “out”).

Ausfahrt really just means exit, hence you will often see it meaning “Keep clear!” or “Do not block exit/driveway”.

Anybody still confused?

  1. I can understand the confusion. Perhaps we should all learn these important words before visiting new countries. Thank you, Elke, for sharing this with our Confused challenge.
