I’ve shown photos of the “Worschtmarkt” fountain in Bad Dürkheim. Today it is the biggest wine fest in the world but at its outset it was a once a year market day combined with a festive atmosphere involving music, food and drink. For many people living in smaller villages and even isolated farmsteads it was possibly the only day in the year that they came to town and they used their chance to buy necessary supplies and a few luxuries. “Billiger Jakob”, or Cheap Jacob is the generic name for a stall operator who loudly praises his (cheap) wares.

Wine is needed all year round, though. There are milk vending machines all over Germany but I’ve only ever seen wine vending machine in the Palatinate, Germany’s foremost wine growing region.

Wine asks for cheese, and possibly a bit of smoked sausage and bread. This cheese stall is from Sardinia.

Occasionally the surrounding is more impressive than the wares (wine again) being peddled, the protestant market church in Wiesbaden with stalls from the wine market.
