“So this is hell. I’d never have believed it. You remember all we were told about the torture-chambers, the fire and brimstone, the “burning marl.” Old wives’ tales! There’s no need for red-hot pokers. Hell is—other people!”
― Jean-Paul Sartre, No Exit

Sartre’s quote from his stage play has always been true. In small, insidious ways, and in large, horrific ways.

There were numerous death marches from concentration camps to other locations (i.e. away from the advance of the allied forces). In 2025 there was a remembrance march passing this sculpture in Bad Tölz behind a banner reading “Never again”.

That’s a house in the town centre of Bad Tölz. Like most houses here it is beautifully maintained. It has a cute little dormer, the windows are set-off by paintings and it has painted and raised stone panels running up the facade. Looking up reveals a painted, maybe even tiled border in the overhang of the roof. The difficulty in photographing a house like this is caused by the narrow streets which makes it difficult to get a shot of of the whole house. Furthermore, being in a group and not being able to really set up a shot results in cut off corners and weird angles. But here it is.

I wrote last week that Bavarian window seem to be all about shutters but that seems not to hold true for downtown Bad Tölz. I saw a lot of painted window frames. The blueish grey house has the inscription Bader, i.e. barber-surgeon; the cream coloured … Continue reading Painted Window Frames
I spent last weekend in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, in the town of Bad Tölz. On our walk up to the Kalvarienberg my camera battery gave up (and my spare was back at the hostel) and I had to resort to using my … Continue reading The Joy of Living
