Nations in Peace

Size is not grandeur, and territory does not make a nation.”

Thomas Huxley

This mural was conceived and transferred to the highrise building by the internationally acclaimed Bahaider. He based it on working with students from this area in Mannheim, who expressed their different ethnic and cultural heritage in drawings. He wanted to remind us that living together peacefully doesn’t happen intuitively but needs mutual respect and tolerance, in a neighbourhood where people with backgrounds of more than 127 nations live. The piece is called Nationen in Frieden (Nations in Peace).

Twin windows

All these twin windows are from Steinbach, a small village which is part of the small town of Michelstadt im Odenwald. One can see that many of the older houses have shingles on the face of the buildings which is typical for the area.

And last not least the windows in the 1200-year-old basilica in the village, designed by Einhard, the biographer of Charlemagne. They are reinforced today and would not have had those bars in Einhard’s time.

From the shadows of time

German doesn’t recogonise a difference between shadow and shade, it’s both Schatten to Germans.

I happen to come across this lovely spot today. To sit in the shade of two majestic linden trees

and look onto the 1200-year-old Einhard basilica, one of very few buildings dating back to the Carolingan area north of the Alps,

and then to go inside and marvel at the shadows which were the same ones looked on by the visitors of the basilica when it was newly built.

With or without

motors.

Many schools are named for Otto Lilienthal, the pioneer in aviation, particularly near Berlin, where he lived and tried out his gliding contraption.

I’m sure the first people seeing Lilienthal in the sky were as mesmerised as these onlookers – admiring a glider that flies through the air without motor.

Worms’ view

The town on the left side of the river Rhine is called Worms which should explain the title. It used to be just one bridge (the right one) but traffic between the state of Hesse and the Palatium had become so much that they added the left one a few years ago and made each a one way bridge. I’ve just read that the older bridge dating back to 1953 has to be replaced in the next few years as renovation is not possible. However, only the part that actually crosses the water needs to be replaced, the new bridge will fit seamlessly with the old parts on either end. A perspective to look forward to.

Painted windows

I’ve used a panaroma shot of this housing development before and was asked why there are no real windows on this side of the building. I don’t have an answer. But I like the building nevertheless, at least from the outside.
