African names

This is Blessing. We met him only briefly one afternoon at the Princess Alice Adoption Home in Johannesburg more than 30 years ago. But I immediately thought of him – and all of the other babies or adults with typical African names that sound not necessarily weird but unusual to European ears.

I met more than one Beauty and a couple of Precious’ (women) and one Passmore and one Wisdom. Currently I have a new student in my class from Nigeria, she’s called Favour.

Word of the Day: Blessing

    1. and Grace Mma Makutsi (but Grace is not that uncommon in English) 😄 — I’m just wondering, is it ever been explained what J. L. B. stands for (her husband’s first names)?

  1. One of our guides in South Africa was named Precious. She said children had to be given an English name as well as a name in their own language. She said many people just chose an English word that described how the felt about the baby, so lots name Precious, etc.
