The German autobahn is known to be a highspeed road famed for no speed limit. Which is only kind of true. The recommended speed is 130 kmh. But there are indeed stretches where there is no speed limit and theoretically you can go as fast as you want or as fast as your car can go but — drivers are required to drive fitting to the driving conditions, e.g. traffic and weather. In practice, the autobahn is seldom empty enough to really go fast, i.e. 200 kmh or more. But 160 kmh are possible. Which to most people is highspeed.

Ah well, what the 2nd amendment is to USAmericans (the right to bear arms) is the “Freie Fahrt für freie Büger” (unlimited driving for free citizens) for Germans.

I don’t think the no limit autobahn is in the German constitution. But one of the big misgivings about the Green Party in Germany is that they would like to end this situation.

I have just done the conversuion – about 25 years ago, I recall doing 100mph for a stretch on the autobahn…that’s 160kph hmmm

My most is 180 kmh, just to see if I could do it. My car then decided that was enough.

The autobahn works because of the general discipline. However, it doesn’t really work – as Margaret has pointed out – in environmental terms.
